Ellsworth Beats Hermon 3-2 for Northern Maine Class B Regional Championship [PHOTOS]
The #3 Ellsworth Eagles beat the #4 Hermon Hawks 3-2 in the Class B Northern Maine Regional Championship on Wednesday, November 8th. The game was played at Hampden Academy with temperatures in the 30's and a strong wind blowing all night, making wind chills in the 20's.
Ellsworth scored 1st, with 1:07 remaining in the 1st Half. Addison Atherton scored, with an assist from senior Megan Jordan.
Ellsworth led 1-0 at the end of the 1st Half.
Then with 5:25 gone in the 2nd Half, the Eagles scored again. This time it was Lily Bean scoring on a header, assisted by Jordan.
That made it 2-0 Ellsworth.
Leading 2-0, Ellsworth's Kelsie Lambert went on a run down the right side, when she looked to cross the ball into the goal mouth. But her cross turned into a shot, as it hit the far left post, and bounced in. The goal came with 26:51 left to go, and proved to be decisive.
Hermon never gave up, despite being down 3-1. The Hawks clawed 1 goal back with 24:06 left to go. Natalie Tardie had the goal, assisted by Madison Stewart.
With 18:17 left, Hermon struck again. This time it was Sam Grover scoring, assisted by Madison Stewart.
Despite carrying the pace of play late in the 2nd Half, the Hawks weren't able to score again, and the Eagles won 3-2.
Ellsworth outshot Hermon 18-12, and had a 4-2 advantage in corners.
Hermon has dominated Class B North since 2019, being the Northern Maine Champions in 2019, 2021 and 2022. They didn't win 2020 because there was no tournament due to the pandemic.
This was Ellsworth's 1st Northern Maine title since they were Eastern Maine champions in 1998 and 1999
Ellsworth will play the #1 seed, Yarmouth for the State Title on Saturday, November 11th. Yarmouth beat #2 Cape Elizabeth 2-1 on Wednesday, for the Southern Maine State Championship.
And how about this? The Yarmouth Coach, Andrew Higgins, was a former soccer standout at Ellsworth High School in the early ‘90s?
