Eagles Stun Tigers 6-2
The Gardiner Tigers Softball Team had only lost 1 game all season, prior to their Quarterfinal game against the Ellsworth Eagles. That didn't bother the Eagles, as Ellsworth went down to Gardiner and stunned the number 1 seed, handing them their 2nd loss of the season and ending Gardiner's season 6-2 on Thursday, June 8th.
Mackenzie Chipman pitched a complete game for Ellsworth, allowing 2 hits, walking 4 and striking out 2.
Gardiner scored 1 run in the 1st inning and 1 in the 2nd inning to take a 2-0 lead going into the top of the 3rd. Trinity Montigny walked and went to 2nd base on Hannah Sargent's fielder's choice. Mariah Young doubled, scoring Montigny. Young scored on Callie Hammer's single, knotting the score at 2-2 after 2 1/2 innings.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Gardiner was threatening, but Jazmin Clarly was thrown out at 3rd as she attempted to take an extra base on an errant throw. That made the score 2-2.
In the top of the 5th inning, Katelynn Bagley singled, and Hannah Sargent singled, moving Bagley to 3rd. Bagley scored on Young's sacrifice fly. Katie Hammer singled to right center, scoring Sargent, and the Eagles were up 4-2.
In the top of the 7th inning, Hannah Sargent was hit by a pitch, and then Mariah Young reached on catcher's interference. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Callie Hammer doubled, scoring Sargent, and Shelby Cote singled scoring Young. That made the score 6-2.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, Kylie Sirois singled, but Brooke Somes flew out to right for the 1st out. Meghan Meehan popped out to Ellie Clarke at 1st base for the 2nd out, and then Chipman got Marget Bell to pop up to Hannah Stevens at 3rd base to end the game!
Ellsworth, now 12-6 will play the 4th seed Oceanside Mariners on Saturday in the Semifinals.
