The Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1 on Monday, May 18th in Kansas City as Willson Contreras hit his 10th homer and Sonny Gray pitched 6.0 innings.

Contreras hit a 2-run homer in the 6th inning, breaking a scoreless tie.

Jarren Duran drove in the 3rd run with a sacrifice fly.

Masataka Yoshida hit a triple and was 1-4. Mickey Gasper was 2-5. Andruw Monasterio who was playing shortstop was 2-4. Connor Wong was 1-4 with a double. Marcelo Mayer had a single. Nick Sogard, playing 3rd base was 1-3 with a single

Yoshida threw out Michael Massey at the plate from the outfield.

Sonny Gray picked up his 5th win, and is 5-1. He pitched 6.0 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 run. He struck out 9 and walked 1, lowering his ERA to 2.93.

Justin Slaten pitched the 7th inning and struck out 2. Garrett Whitlock pitched the 8th inning, striking out 1. Aroldis Chapman picked up his 11th save of the season, striking out 1 in the 9th inning.

Boston is now 20-27. Kansas City is now 20-28. The 2 teams will play on Tuesday, May 19th in the 2nd game of the 3-game series, with the pregame starting at 6:40 p.m.
