The Boston Red Sox reduced their Magic Number to clinch a playoff spot to 3 after beating the Texas Rangers 4-3 in Texas on Thursday, September 17th.

Trevor Story hit a 3-run homer in the 8th inning to give Boston the lead. It was his 4th homer of the season. Story finished 2-4.

Adley Rutschman was 1-3 with a double.

Willson Contreras was 1-3 but was forced to leave the game in the 8th inning after being hit in the hand. X-Rays after the game were negative, and he's considered day-to-day with a bruised hand.

Sonny Gray pitched 6.1 innings allowing 3 hits and 3 runs. He struck out 6 and walked 3.

Wyatt Olds picked up the win, pitching 1.0 inning and is 2-0. Garrett Whitlock earned his 4th save of the season, pitching the 9th inning.
