The 3rd time proved to be the charm as the Ellsworth Boys Basketball Team, which had lost their 2 earlier encounters with MDI, beat the Trojans 71-48 in the opening game of Tourney 2019 from the Cross Insurance Center on Friday, February 15th. Ellsworth, in their 2 losses to MDI scored a combined 75 points, but Friday night they exploded for 71 points.

Ellsworth jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the 1st Quarter, and led 8-0 before MDI scored their 1st basket with 4:29 left in the Quarter. Hunter Curtis had 7 points for Ellsworth with a 3-pointer, while Devin Grindle had 2 3's for 6 points. Jackson Curtis had 4 points. For MDI Derek Collin had 4 points, Brett Duley a 3-pointer, Steven Pierce 2 points and Drew Shea was 1-2 from the free throw line.

Ellsworth outscored MDI 15-13 in the 2nd Quarter to take a 32-23 lead at the end of the 1st Half. Darby Barry had 8 points with 2 3's. Devin Grindle was a perfect 3-3 from the free throw line and Hunter Curtis and Jackson Curtis each had 2 points. For MDI Steven Pierce had 8 points with 2 3's, Brett Duley 2 points, Derek Collin 2 points and Drew Shea was 1-2.

In the 3rd Quarter, MDI went on a 7-0 run as they pounded the ball inside to Eli Parady who ended up with 10 points in the Quarter. But then Ellsworth ended up scoring 13 points, including Connor Crawford who scored at the buzzer. Collin had 3 points and Shea 2 points for MDI in addition to Parady's 10 points. For Ellsworth Hunter Curtis had 4 points, Darby Barry was a perfect 3-3 from the free throw line and Norman Jodrey and Crawford had 2 points each. At the end of the 3rd Quarter Ellsworth led 45-38

In the 4th Quarter Devin Grindle took over for Ellsworth, scoring 12 points including a 3-pointer.  Jackson Curtis had 5 points, Hunter Curtis was 5-6 from the free throw line and Michael Palmer and Austin Harris each were 2-2 from the free throw line. Brett Duley had 4 points for MDI, Steven Pierce 3 points and Drew Shea a 3-pointer.

Ellsworth had 4 players in double figures, Devin Grindle with a game high 21 points, Hunter Curtis 18 points, Jackson Curtis 13 points and Darby Barry 11 points. Ellsworth was a blistering 21-29 from the free throw line.

MDI was led by Steven Pierce with 13 points while Eli Parady had 10 points. MDI was 4-13 from the free throw line.

Ellsworth improves to 14-6 and they will play Caribou in the semifinals on Wednesday, February 20th at 2:05. That game will be broadcast on AM 1370 WDEA, on WDEA Internet Radio, on our free downloadable APP and on any Alexa enabled device.

MDI finishes the season with a 13-6 record.
