The 23rd Annual Carol Dyer Luminaria Evening was held on Saturday night, August 10th on the Village Green in Bar Harbor..

Organized by the YWCA of Bar Harbor it was another hauntingly beautiful night in Bar Harbor. As dusk approached, luminary bags were placed along the pathways and circling the gazebo in the Village Green. Written on each bag were names of those either fighting (In honor of) cancer or those who had passed (in memory of) from cancer. All the proceeds were being given to the Beth C. Wright Cancer Center.

Carol Dyer was the beloved children's librarian at the Jesup Memorial Library who passed away from brain cancer.

I had the honor of reading the names of those on the bags in between songs from Alice French who was playing in the gazebo. The weather was ideal as the remnants of Hurricane Debby left early in the day.

Reading the names is such a poignant night. I recognize many of the names that are either fighting or who have passed. Unfortunately it seems, every year more names are added to the in memory of column.

As I read their names, I offer a silent prayer for the survivors, for those who have passed and their friends and family that cherish their memories. I truly hope that we can find a cure for cancer, and soon.
