The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office has released the identity of a woman killed in a car accident Monday evening. Distracted driving contributed to the crash.

Chief Deputy Troy Morton said in a press release that it was around 5:40 Monday evening when deputies responded to a head-on collision on Route 2, at the Hermon-Carmel town line.

Killed in the accident was Karen Worcester, age 60 of Carmel. She was traveling toward Carmel in a Ford Fusion when a Jeep Liberty, driven by Rebecca Chasse, age 52 of Carmel, hit her head-on.

Morton says Chasse was having an argument with her daughter, Rachelle Welch, age 29 of Carmel, who was a passenger in the vehicle. She became distracted, crossed the center line, and struck Worcester's vehicle.

The accident remains under investigation.
