Just when you thought the Boston Red Sox would not be very active at the winter meetings they go out and make a trade on the first day by shipping off Wade Miley. The Sox sent Miley and minor league pitcher Johnathan Aro to the Mariners in exchange for relief pitcher Carson Smith and starter Roenis Elias.

Smith is a power pitcher that appeared in 70 games last season and went 2-5 out of the pen with 13 saves. The 26 year old struck out 92 batters and walked just 22 while posting an ERA of 2.31. The Sox will control Smith for 5 more years and have an additional 2 years of pre-arbitration years.

Elias is a 27 year old lefty pitcher from Cuba who went 5-8 last season in 20 starts. Elias had a 4.14 ERA with 97 strikeouts and 44 walks. In 2014 he made 29 starts and posted a 10-12 record with a 3.85 ERA. Elias does have minor league options which means he could start the season in Pawtucket if he fails to earn a spot in the rotation.

In his one season with the Red Sox Miley went 11-11 and turned into one of their most consistent starters in the rotation. He also had a run-in with Manager John Farrell early in the season when he was lifted from a game.
