Shirley Conklin of Salisbury Cove was named Mount Desert Island Hospital’s 2016 Volunteer of the Year in recognition of her contributions to the community and her outstanding commitment to the MDI Hospital Auxiliary. Conklin received the award at MDI Hospital’s Annual Volunteer Celebration on July 15 at the Kebo Valley Golf Club.

In a press release issued by Mount Desert Island Hospital they stated "For more than 4 years, Conklin has brought her leadership abilities and can-do attitude to the MDI Hospital Auxiliary. When asked recently what brings her joy, Shirley paused and replied, "I don't feel like I'm anything special but I just like to help people and make a difference in their lives." In addition to her service to the MDI Hospital Auxiliary, where she has recruited new members and encouraged and increased participation at all levels, Conklin is also active in the Eden Baptist Church.

"Shirley is someone who exemplifies MDI Hospital Organization's values of compassion, commitment, improvement, integrity, respect and teamwork", said award presenter Lani Naihe, advancement director at MDI Hospital. "She carries these values through in her everyday life, in her community and through her commitment to our hospital auxiliary. Shirley not only became involved with our auxiliary but became president in only her 2nd year as a member."

Also recognized were the contributions made by the 211 volunteers. According to Brenda Sprague, MDI Hospital's volunteers contributed 5,923 hours supporting MDI Hospital, the MDI Hospital Auxiliary, Birch Bay Retirement Village and the Don and Beth Straus Program.
