One person is dead after a crash on Route 1A in Ellsworth on Thursday.

The accident near Storage Plus on Route 1A (Bangor Road) occurred around 2 p.m.

The driver of a Toyota pickup -- Nathan Rapp, 57, of Blue Hill -- died at the scene.

A 15-year-old passenger in the Rapp's pickup truck was taken to the hospital.

In a second vehicle, a Nissan, two people --  James Steenstra, 82, of Hancock and his passenger Virginia Steenstra 79 -- also were hospitalized.

Witnesses at the scene along with physical evidence from the crash indicate that the Nissan which was traveling south crossed over into the path of the Toyota which was traveling north. Based on the preliminary investigation it does not appear that speed or drug or alcohol impairment contributed to the crash.

The accident temporarily closed the Bangor Road. Police asked motorists to use the Red Bridge road or Christian Ridge road to bypass the scene. The road reopened around 4 p.m.
