Jonesport Searchers Looking for Missing Man find Human Remains

A search for a missing man, last seen in the Jonesport area, resulted in the discovery of human remains.

The searchers were looking for William Merchant, who was reported missing on July 8, 2019. The last known sighting of the 43-year-old was in the Jonesport area. On Thursday, the searchers came across human remains off Route 187 in Jonesport, near Wilders Way.

Members of the Washington County Sheriff's Department, Maine Warden Service and State Police, community volunteers, and police dogs were involved in the search. Officials have not said whether they believe the remains to be Mr. Merchant.

The remains were sent to the Chief Medical Examiner's office in Augusta, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine identity and cause of death.
