What That Monstrosity of a Building on the Portland, Maine, Waterfront Will Be
For more than a year, there's been a major ongoing construction project along a portion of Commercial Street in Portland, Maine. That project had led to lane closures and traffic snarls that both locals and tourists have been frustrated by.
But as the months have wore on, the size and scope of what is being built along the waterfront seemed to increase. It wasn't just another building for Portland Yacht Services being constructed. Instead, whatever was being built was massive.
If you've been wondering what exactly what building is going to be, the answer won't excite you. It's going to be a monstrosity of a warehouse. Eimskip needs extra space for supplies being shipped over in containers. The warehouse will allow Eimskip to accept more deliveries and more efficiently store what has already been delivered.
As for the Portland waterfront, the view suffers yet again. What was once a gorgeous drive into the heart of the Old Port, now feels more like a trip through a busy industrial park before hitting commercial pay dirt.
Several large structures have been constructed in recent years, wiping out stunning views of the million-dollar bridge, the South Portland coastline as well as bristling, blue water of the ocean in Portland.
Unfortunately, it's a necessary evil. Portland's working waterfront has been displaced by residential and commercial development. That has led to sacrifices being made with other parts of the waterfront. That includes giving up a view to make a shipping company more efficient.
There's still a little more space along that end of Commercial Street. Room for one more massive building if it's needed.
