Cancer sucks. And these days, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who isn't personally affected by the disease.

So what can we do to help those around us who are fighting this disease?

This Sunday, you can pound the pavement to support Mainer's fighting Cancer.

Christina Parrish is a 16-year Cancer Survivor. She took it upon herself to create the nonprofit  "The Purple Iris Foundation" after an 18-month battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

The mission of the organization is "to raise awareness, provide support, and give hope to individuals and families affected by cancer, in Maine."

The Purple Iris Foundation helps Maine folks with resources and financial assistance through the Maine Cancer Relief Fund, based on their need and qualifications.

To provide these services, The Purple Irish Foundation does several fundraisers. Along with founding the organization, Parrish founded one of its biggest fundraisers, the "Pound The Pavement 5K Color Fun Run/Walk" 12 years ago.

Pound The Pavement is a color run, and this year, they're adding a special
"Kids Mad Dash of Color" event so kids ages 10 and under can join in the fun of helping.

"At each kilometer mark, Pound the Pavement runners/walkers are doused from head to toe in a different colored powder. Participants wear white at the starting line and finish the race plastered in color.

Once the run/walk is over, the fun continues at the finish line with a visit to the Sea Dog and two (2) complimentary beverages for all those 21 years of age and over! Don't miss the party with photo ops, friendship, and celebration!"

This year, they're also taking the opportunity to honor those who have survived Cancer.

"We invite cancer survivors to participate for FREE - choose the cancer survivor event option - we will be in touch to learn more about you!"
