I love takeout.

Generally speaking, I love to dine out. I also love to eat home. And often times, I enjoy combining the love of both with some solid takeout. Some meals aren't meant to be thrown in a to-go box and taken out the door, and I get that. On the other hand, I'm just as apt to stop at my favorite fish monger and have some lobsters cooked.

But the idea of being able to either have food delivered by someone else or going to get it myself, is an option that I utilize on a pretty regular basis. And I know I'm not alone, because WeThrift.com says Mainers are in the Top 10 for their love of takeout meals. But what's even more interesting, is how much we spend.

Maine ain't the biggest place, compared to other states. But we have a massive obsession with food. Other states may even have more options to choose from for takeout, but only one state spends more money on takeout every year. Colorado has us beat as far actual dollars spent, but only by like $200 a year.

Mainers, on average, spend over $5,000 a year on takeout. so while other states may place higher on this list, because of size and choices, Maine spends big bucks. It might be pizza, burgers, sandwiches, lobster... you name it. But there are plenty of Mainers that see takeout as a way of life.

Why do you think we spend so much?

My guess is location. Sure, date nights are awesome. But there are plenty of Mainers who live 30-40 minutes from the nearest sizable town. Speaking for myself, who lives a solid 20-25 minutes from the nearest destination, it's often easier to grab something on my way home, than go back out again.

Some folks may prefer takeout to going home and changing up and heading back out again, and feeling like you're not even sitting down to dinner until 7:30pm. Or, options like Door Dash have made us lazy. Could be both... At any rate, say what you want, but we love our takeout, and I doubt that's gonna change.
