Unveiling the Secret: This is Maine’s All-Time Favorite Food
Mainers love to eat. Especially takeout.
Recently, we told you about how Mainers spend more money on takeout than any almost any other state. I feel like this definitely checks out. The way I see it, a lot of people live in rural areas. So after a 30-minute commute home, who'd want to run right back out for another 30-minute drive, and back again?

So I figure that if we're spending all that money on takeout, it's quite likely that there's one kind of food we buy more often than others. And it's true. At first I was kind of surprised by the answer. I sort of assumed it'd be Mexican. But surprisingly, it's about as far from Mexico geographically as you can get.
Mainers love Chinese food more than anything else.
For real, I thought it would be Mexican. But the folks at HelloMillions.com combed through a bunch of Google data to determine what the top foods are in all the states. Not only did Maine have Chinese as #1, right behind it was Thai food. And Indian food was in 4th place. So we apparently reeeeally love our Asian food here in Maine.
Italian came in 2nd, and I'm assuming pizza specifically. But yeah, out of the five kinds of food that were entered for Maine, Mexican came in last. How crazy is that? But then I thought about the sheer number of Chinese restaurants around Maine. It literally seems like there's one in almost every town. I Googled it... there are 137 Chinese spots in Maine. So yeah... we like it. By comparison, there are only 61 McDonald's.
What about the rest of the country?
Nationwide, it's probably no surprise that Chinese food was the favorite across the board, in all states. Unlike Maine's list though, Mexican is the #2 food in the US. Considering how many Chipotle locations there are, I'm not really shocked. My personal favorite came in 7th place overall, with sushi.

Honestly, I could eat my weight in sushi, if given the opportunity. I absolutely love it. But now you are armed with the knowledge of what Mainers want to eat the most. Not gonna lie, it's kind of making me hungry for a PuPu Platter right now. And while I'm told that's not "real" Chinese food, I assure you, I'm happy to get "real" full eating it!
