Even With Business Booming, Belfast’s ‘Chocolate Drop’ Closing Up Shop
If you've ever visited downtown Belfast, you have likely passed, or even gone into a little candy and ice-cream shop called The Chocolate Drop.
According to mainestreetmaine.org, if you're looking for sweets, that's the Chocolate Drop's specialty!
"Chocolate Drop Candy Shop located on Main Street Belfast, Maine offers locally made, hand-dipped chocolates, a vast selection of Jelly Belly's, and features an old fashioned soda fountain, local, hand-made ice cream, and old fashioned sodas. Nostalgic candy for all ages. "
For over a decade, whenever my family has come to town, we've made it a point to pop in for a treat.
The driving forces behind this sweet spot have been a couple of guys named Dave: Dave Crabiel and Dave Brassbridge.
Sadly, the Daves, as we'll call them, announced this week that they plan to close up shop soon.
They shared their intentions through social media on Wednesday afternoon explaining that their decision was personal, not based on business.
"Downtown Belfast is thriving, in fact, our store has had one of our best years ever. While there are several reasons we are closing, lack of business is not one of them. The truth is running a busy candy store for 15 years takes a ton of time and effort. We look forward to the next chapter in our lives."
One very cool feature of this particular shop, aside from all the delicious candy and ice cream, are the photos of smiling patrons enjoying themselves as they visit, which are plastered all over the inside wall of the place.
The Daves have a special message and special request for those who are featured in those photos.
"We truly loved serving you, you brought us great ideas, gave us gentle corrections when needed and hopefully enjoyed some delicious treats. If you have your picture on our wall, let us know and we would be honored if you would take it home."
We're told that anyone with a gift card to the Chocolate Drop should plan to either come in to redeem it, or cash it in, within the next month. After that, the Daves say to reach out to them directly for reimbursement.
As for the contents and equipment in that shop, much of which has a very nostalgic vibe, they say they'll be selling that off after the store closes.
Wishing the Daves a heartfelt farewell, I'd like to add my "Thank You" to the long list of those they've already received. They had a really cool little place that my family always looked forward to visiting when coming to Belfast, and they kept it going for so many years.
We tip our soda-jerk hats to them and wish them the best of luck in whatever they plan to do next.
