It appears that pedestrian deaths are on the way down here in Maine.

According to an article from the Governors Highway Safety Association there was a nationwide drop in pedestrian deaths.  The article explains that there were 7,148 pedestrians killed in the United States last year. The number is down by abut 4% from 2023.

What about Maine?  Did we see a decline in the number of people on foot dying in the Pine Tree State?

 

 

How Many Pedestrian Deaths Were There in Maine Last Year?

According to the article, there was a decline in the number of pedestrian deaths in Maine between 2023 and 2024.

In 2023, there were 20 pedestrian deaths in Maine.  That number dropped to just 14 last year.

Officials say that the majority of those fatalities (11 of the 14) involved a pedestrian who was impaired at the time of their death.  For example, someone who was intoxicated who passed out in the middle of the road.

If we continue to keep the same pace this year, we'll see another decline in 2025.  Since January 1st, there have been six pedestrian deaths in Maine.
