The State is currently holding $272,898,980 worth of unclaimed property, and some of it could be yours.  Here's how to quickly check and see.

It happens every day, someone overpays a bill, someone moves away only to be never heard from again, or someone dies and the next of kin cannot be found.

So where does that $ go when all avenues have been exhausted?  When lawyers and business people all throw their hands up in the air and give up trying to contact someone?  It goes to the State Treasurer's Office, where it is held free of charge until the heir of the former holder comes forward to claim it.

Tens of millions of unclaimed cash and property every year, and some of it may be yours.

The Maine State Treasurer's Unclaimed Property Program is free and easy to use, and only takes a minute of your time.  It's a service that's used a couple of times a year by the majority of the state's residents, just to be sure, and it's also one of the first things a lawyer will do for you when hired.

All you have to do is fill in the fields that ask for your first and last name, your city and zip code, and a property ID if you have one.  Hit the submit button and within seconds there is a listing of names, and one of them may be yours.  Each listing tells what entity reported the unclaimed property and how much it is worth.

To receive the unclaimed cash just hit the "Claim" button.

So there you go, roll the dice and good luck!
