A Maine artist, hoping to call attention to abandoned storefronts, has created a beautiful birdseed carpet in Bangor. It sits in front of what was once Bangor's location for Home Depot.

Artist Susan Smith of Dover-Foxcroft used more than 700 pounds of birdseed for the design that's based on an old tapestry. The placement is somewhat ironic since, had the store still been located there, she could have purchased her supplies on the spot!

This store, like so many in Bangor and elsewhere, is another example of a Big Box store that built a specifically designed building and then moved out when owners realized they needed a bigger space. The unique designs often make them hard to re-sell.

Smith told WABI-TV 5 that she created the artwork as a way to highlight this and other abandoned or forgotten properties and how they have become home to hundreds of birds. It's kind of eerie as you stand in the parking lot and look around at Target and Burlington Coat Factory and wonder how long it will be before they, too, have moved on and left an empty shell.
