A company in China actually refused to let employees go home after their office filled with car exhaust fumes and issued them with gas masks instead. Contractors who had come to replace the office's air conditioning system botched the job by setting it up to suck-in supposedly fresh air from an underground parking lot below the building. Staff complained of watery eyes, coughing fits and headaches as a result of having to brave the fumes so on the third day the company finally agreed to buy them gas masks but would not let them miss work. Meanwhile the contractors have refused to change anything, saying that the company had told them to reinstall the air conditioning through the wall of the elevator shaft. Health experts who tested the office said that as long as staff wore the masks there was no reason to close down the office until the problem is fixed.
