As a powerful storm bears down on Maine, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the region with heavy, wet snow on the way Tuesday into Wednesday.

The latest forecast calls for 18 inches in the Bangor area with lesser amounts to the north and coast. Snow is expected to accumulate at a rate of 1-3 inches per-hour, with the heaviest accumulations coming Tuesday afternoon.

The snowfall is expected to start in the Bangor area around 10 a.m. Tuesday and last until Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the weather service a blizzard warning for coastal Downeast areas, including coastal Hancock and coastal Washington County. The worst conditions in that region will be from mid-afternoon to the evening.

It's the third significant winter storm to hit Maine in the last two weeks.
