Trojans Storm Back For the Win 65-62
The MDI Boy's Basketball team finally played the Washington Academy Raiders on Monday, January 20th, after the previously scheduled games were postponed three times, and the Trojans were in danger of getting blown out of their own gym trailing by 17 in the 3rd Quarter, before storming back to win 65-62 in Bar Harbor.
Washington Academy led 16-14 at the end of the 1st Quarter. Fred MacLean sank 2 3-pointers, and Dustin Emery and Gage Feeney each had 4 points for the Raiders. Jon Phelps had 6 points for MDI, while Andrew Davis had 5 points, and Riley Swanson had a 3-pointer for the Trojans.
Washington Academy increased their lead to 9 points at the half 36-25. Kyle Taylor had 7 points for Washington Academy including a 3-pointer, and MacLean swished his 3rd 3-pointer of the night for the Raiders. Phelps and Billy Laverdiere sank 3-pointers for MDI in the 2nd Quarter.
Washington Academy came out on fire in the 3rd Quarter, to take a 17 point lead early in the quarter, as Feeney had 8 points in the Quarter including 2 3-pointers. Jon Phelps kept shooting, but his shots didn't start falling until late in the quarter, and ended up with 4 points for the quarter. Steven Hanscom was huge for MDI, battling Washington Academy's Gage Feeney and Austin Seavey under the boards, and scored 6 points in the quarter, as MDI battled to cut the lead to 9, trailing Washington Academy 46-37 at the end of the 3rd Quarter.
In the 4th Quarter, MDI outscored Washington Academy 28-16.Abe Philbrook scored his 9 points in the final minute and half of the game, including 2 3-pointers, the last a good 6 feet past the 3-point line. Phelps had 8 points, going 6-8 from the free throw line, including hitting 2 free throws after a technical foul was called on Washington Academy's Kyle Taylor. Riley Swanson had a huge 3-pointer for MDI in the quarter as well. The Raider's Taylor had 8 points in the 4th Quarter, including 2 3-pointers. Gage Feeney's 3 point shot with less than 2 seconds left went half way down the basket, before bouncing out, and MDI came away with a huge victory.
MDI's Jon Phelps had a game high 22 points, and Andrew Davis had 14 points. Philbrook and Swanson had 2 3-pointers, and Phelps and Laverdiere each had a 3-pointer. MDI went 15-21 from the free throw line, including going 9-13 in the crucial 4th Quarter. Washington Academy was led by Gage Feeney with 18 points, Kyle Taylor had 15 points and Fred MacLean had 11 points. Washington Academy sank 8 3-pointers, 3 each by Taylore and MacLean and 2 by Feeney. Washington Academy was 8-9 from the free throw line.
MDI improved to 9-3 and next play at Caribou on Friday, January 24th at 8 PM and Presque Isle on Saturday January 25th at 2:30 PM. Both of those games will be broadcast on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio. Washington Academy fell to 10-3 and will next play at home against Orono on Friday, January 24th. MDI travels to East Machias to play Washington Academy on Tuesday, January, 28th at 7 PM, in a game that will be broadcast on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio.
