Trojans’ Season Ends 7-6

The MDI Trojans Softball Team staked Oceanside to a 6-0 lead but fought back valiantly, and just came up a little short, losing 7-6 to Oceanside in a Class B Prelim game.

Oceanside, the 4th seed, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning as Kalyn Grovel homered with no out. MDI escaped further damage, but in the bottom of the 3rd inning Oceanside scored 5 runs as they sent 9 batters to the plate. Kalyn Grovel singled and Alexis Mazurek doubled, but MDI's defense committed 3 errors in the inning which allowed Oceanside to continue the scoring.

MDI pushed across 1 run in the top of the 4th. Avalon Kerley singled, and then stole 2nd base. She advanced to 3rd on a single by Alaina Duley and then scored when Katie Guarino reached on an error.

Oceanside answered in the bottom of the 4th. Lauren Miller singled and stole 2nd base. Ari Curtis singled, moving Miller to 3rd base and Miller would score on a passed ball.

MDI then nearly mounted a comeback, scoring 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning. Julianna Cleaves doubled to start the inning off and would come around to score. Darcy Kanu walked and stole 2 bases and scored on a single by Avalon Kerley. Kerley would end up scoring on a error. After 5 innings it was Oceanside 7 MDI 4.

MDI scored 2 more runs in the top of the 6th inning. Molly Carroll walked, and Avalon Kerley reached on an error. Carroll and Kerley scored on a single by Cassidy Parady. But that was as close as MDI would come, as they fell 7-6.

Haley Littlefield took the loss for MDI, allowing 7 runs, 4 of which were earned. She gave up 8 hits, struck out 8 and walked 3.

Paige Tyler picked up the win for Oceanside, allowing 6 runs, 2 of which were earned. She gave up 7 hits, struck out 9 and walked 8.

For MDI Julianna Cleaves was 1-4, Darcy Kanu was 1-4, Avalon Kerley was 2-4, Cassidy Parady was 1-4 , Alaina Duley was 1-3 and Ali Bierman was 1-2.

For Oceanside, Lauren Miller was 2-4, Ari Curtis was 1-4, Kalyn Grovel was 2-3 and Alexis Mazurek was 3-3.

MDI finishes the season at 6-11. Playing their last games as Trojans were seniors Haley Littlefield, Molly Carroll and Ali Bierman. Thank you to these three seniors and all the players and their families as well as the coaches for a fun season.
