Trojans Nearly Upset Houlton
The MDI Trojan's Girl's Basketball Team nearly shocked Northern Maine, as they were within 1 point of the number 1 seed Houlton Shiretowners 37-36 with 4:30 remaining in the game, before falling to Houlton 47-39 in the Quarterfinals on Saturday, February 18th.
Houlton jumped out to a 11-4 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter. Kolleen Bouchard had 7 points, Rylee Warman 3 points and Emma Peterson 1 point for Houlton. For MDI Julia Watras and Maddy Good each had 2 points.
In the 2nd Quarter, Houlton outscored MDI 11-8 to take a 22-12 lead. Bouchard had 5 points, and Rylee Warman, Tessa Solomon and Mikayla Fitzpatrick each had 2 points for the Shiretowners. For MDI Mariah Hamor had 4 points, Abbe Miller had 2 points and Julia Watras and Alexis Clarito each had 1 point.
In the 3rd Quarter MDI outscored Houlton 18-13 to cut the lead to 5 points, 35-30. Maddy Candage had 9 points for MDI, Julia Watras had a 3-pointer, and Maya Watras, Abbe Miller and Mariah Hamor each has 2 points for the Trojans. For Houlton, Rylee Warman had 5 points and Kolleen Bouchard, Kristen Brewer, Aspen Flewelling and Makayla Watson each had 2 points for the Shiretowners.
In the 4th Quarter, MDI got agonizingly close, before Houlton pulled away for the victory. Kolleen Bouchard went 4-4 from the free throw line, Tessa Solomon had 4 points, Rylee Warman hit a 3-pointer and Aspen Flewelling chipped in 1 point for Houlton. For MDI Maya Watras had 4 points, Julia Watras had 4 points and Maddy Good had 2 points in the Quarter.
Houlton was led by Kolleen Bouchard with a game high 18 points, while Rylee Warman had 13 points. Houlton was 20-29 from the free throw line.
MDI was led by Julia Watras and Maddy Candage each with 9 points. The Trojans were 8-17 from the free throw line.
MDI's season comes to an end, with a record of 12-8.
Houlton advances to the Class B North finals to play Hermon on Wednesday night, February 22nd. The Shiretowners record is 18-1.
