The MDI Girls Basketball Team traveled to Orono on Monday, January 15th, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and beat the Red Riots 39-30 in an early afternoon contest.

Orono jumped out to a 10-7 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter as MDI's shooting was as cold as the 7 degree temperature. Laurie Melanson had 4 points with a 3-pointer for Orono, Camryn Brown had 4 points and Isabelle Henderson had 2 points for the Red Riots. For MDI Maddy Candage had 4 points and Julia Watras had 3 points.

MDI took the lead in the 2nd Quarter 20-19 as Hannah Chamberlain came off the bench and drained 3 3-pointers before picking up her 3rd foul. Watras had 4 points for MDI. For Orono Alyssa Labelle coming off the bench had 4 points including a 3-pointer, Ellie Sockabasin had 4 points and Molly McCluskey 1 point.

In the 3rd Quarter, MDI picked up the defensive intensity, limiting Orono to just 2 points, those coming from the free throw line, while they scored 10 points in the Quarter to take a 30-21 lead at the end of the 3rd Quarter. Alexis Clarito had a 3-pointer, while Watras, Emily Banks and Maddy Good had 2 points each and Candage was 1-2 from the free throw line. Isabelle Henderson and Lauren Melanson were each 1-2 from the free throw line.

In the 4th Quarter, Orono was able to cut the lead to 4 points before MDI pulled away. Candage had 6 points, Rachelle Swanson 2 points and Watras was 1-2 from the free throw line. For Orono Izzy Baker and Isabelle Henderson each had a 3-pointer and Ellie Sockabsin was 3-4 from the free throw line.

MDI was led by Maddy Candage with a game high 11 points while Julia Watras had 10 points. Hannah Chamberlain had 9 points. The Trojans were 5-13 from the free throw line.

Orono was led by Ellie Sockabasin with 7 points while Isabelle Henderson had 6 points. Alyssa Labelle and Camryn Brown had 4 points each. The Red Riots were 10-17 from the free throw line.

MDI now 8-1 has a huge week ahead of them, playing at the Cross Insurance Center against John Bapst on Wednesday, January 15th at 6:30 PM and then at Hermon on Friday, January 17th at 7PM. The game against John Bapst will be broadcast on AM 1370 WDEA, WDEA Internet Radio, on our free downloadable APP and on any Alexa enabled device
