Trojans Beat Ponies 28-20
It was a tale of two halves Friday night, as the MDI Trojans took a 21-0 lead at the half, and hung on to beat the Foxcroft Academy Ponies 28-20 in Bar Harbor in the first night of football.
MDI won the opening coin toss and elected to receive and started play on their own 25 yard line. They were advancing up the field but Croix Albee was tackled hard after a Phelps' completion and the 10 play drive was stalled as Foxcroft took over on their own 16 yard line after Albee fumbled.
MDI's defense forced Foxcroft Academy to punt, and the Trojans took over at their own 44 yard line with 4 minutes left in the 1st Quarter. Albee ran in from 4 yards out, and Drew Rich kicked the extra point and with 11:56 remaining in the 1st Half, MDI led 7-0.
Foxcroft Academy took over at their own 30 yard line, and their drive was stopped when James Carroll intercepted a Nick Clawson pass and returned it to the 18 yard line of the Ponies. MDI's drive stalled and they attempted a field goal, but Rich's kick was blocked and the Ponies took over on their own 21 yard line with 7:15 left in the half.
Foxcroft Academy fumbled to end their drive, and the Trojans took over with 4 minutes left in the half, on their own 30 yard line. Colby Lee broke a huge run for 58 yards and Albee scored from 10 yards out, in a drive that took just 1:45. Rich kicked the extra point and with 2:35 left in the 1st Half, MDI was up 14-0.
On the ensuing kickoff, Foxcroft fumbled, and MDI took over on their own 45 yard line with 2:23 left in the half. Lee scored from 40 yards out, and Rich converted the Point After, and the Trojans led 21-0 at the half.
In the 1st Half, MDI had 207 yards rushing and 46 yards passing, while Foxcroft Academy had 83 yards rushing and 5 yards passing.
In the 2nd Half, Foxcroft Academy received the kickoff and started at their own 35 yard line. They used a series of quick passes and were able to march up the field, scoring their 1st touchdown on the night as Billy Brock bulled in from 1 yard out. Levi Steadman kicked the extra point and the score was 21-7.
MDI punted the ball on the next series and Foxcroft took over on their own 39 yard line. The Trojans were flagged for roughing the passer to help the Ponies and Michaelb Niles scored from 2 yards out. Steadman's kick was good and with 1:47 remaining in the 3rd Quarter, MDI's lead was cut to 21-14.
MDI then turned the ball over on downs, and Foxcroft took over at the Trojans 49 yard line with 7.5 seconds left in the 3rd Quarter. Brock ran in from 10 yards out for the touchdown, but Steadman missed the point after and with 10:14 left in the game, MDI's lead had been cut to 1, 21-20.
MDI's offense which had been almost non-existent in the 2nd Half, came alive when it counted, and the Trojans were able to run off time as their ground game came alive. Albee ran in from 3 yards out, and Rich kicked his 4th point after, and with 5:44 left in the game MDI was up 28-20.
Foxcroft didn't give up, but Chris Farnsworth intercepted Clawson to ice the game. Farnsworth ran the interception back in for what was initially a touchdown, but was called back as a result of a blocking in the back penalty on the interception return.
MDI is now 1-0 and will play at Belfast on Saturday, September 10th at 7 PM, in a game that will be broadcast on AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio.
