Standoff in Ellsworth Over – Suspect Shot by Police

A standoff that began Saturday morning on Route 179 in Ellsworth ended Sunday morning when a male suspect was shot by a state trooper. Police have released the identities of those involved.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release that a man who held police at bay since Saturday morning was shot by a state trooper on Sunday morning.

Jeffrey Barnard, age 50, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. There's no word on his condition. The woman in the camper with him was his wife, Vicki, age 56. She was not injured in the incident.

The trouble started when the couple barricaded themselves inside a camper on the residential property. It's believed the dispute had something to do with a theft on the property perpetrated by the Barnards, but police are still not revealing any details.

Mr. Barnard was shot by Trooper Scott Duff. As is standard procedure with all police-involved shootings, the Attorney General's office is investigating the incident and has sent a team to the scene, assisted by the State Police. Duff has been placed on administrative leave, with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Tactical teams from the Hancock County Sheriff's Office and Bangor Police assisted with the standoff throughout the night.
