It was past two in the morning when the Red Sox finally beat the Oakland A's in 11 innings, 5-4 on a Pablo Sandoval home run.

Rick Porcello pitched 5 innings allowing 3 runs, all earned and 9 hits. He struck out 3 and walked 1. The Red Sox used 6 relief pitchers, with Matt Barnes picking up the win, pitching a scoreless 10th and 11th inning, walking 1 and striking out 1 without allowing a hit.

Edward Mujica newly traded to the A's pitched a scoreless 8th inning for Oakland retiring Ramirez,  Napoli and Sandoval three up three down.

The two teams meet again in the 2nd game of the 3 game series tonight, with the pregame beginning at 9:20 PM and first pitch at 10:05 PM. Justin Masterson will pitch for the Red Sox. He has a 2-1, 5:19 ERA. Oakland will send Drew Pomeranz 1-3, 5.12 ERA to the mound. The game will be broadcast on AM 1370 WDEA
