The son of a man whose body was found in the town of Richmond has been charged with murder. Information from the son led police to the remains on Monday.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release that Leroy Smith III was notified of the charges against him while he was being held at the Cumberland County Jail on an unrelated charge. He was arrested on Monday for an outstanding warrant in Massachusetts.

The decision to charge him was made by the Attorney General's office after an autopsy performed by the State Medical Examiner's office, which showed that Leroy Smith, Jr. died from multiple sharp force injuries.

State Police investigators spent Tuesday gathering evidence from the Cannard Street apartment in Gardiner that the two men shared. Investigators say Smith was killed in the apartment and his body was later transported to a wooded area off Lincoln Street in Richmond.
