The Brewer Auditorium has opened as a Red Cross Emergency Shelter and Warming Site.

From the Bangor Police Department's Facebook Page

As a result of the weekend’s ice storm, we are experiencing a large numbers of power outages in Bangor and surrounding communities. Heavy ice buildup on power lines and trees, combined with high winds predicted for later today create the potential for even more outages. Bangor Hydro and Central Maine Power are working to get their customers back on line but it is not known how long this will take. This has left many of our neighbors and friends without power and in many cases without heat.

As a result, the local Red Cross and the Penobscot County Emergency Management Agency have opened an emergency shelter at the Brewer Auditorium which is located at 318 Wilson Street in Brewer. This shelter is open and available to all residents of Bangor, Brewer and the surrounding communities. If you live in Bangor and need emergency assistance getting to the shelter, please call the Bangor Police Department’s business line at 947-7384.

If you continue to stay in your home, please remember to use candles, portable gas and propane heaters, and generators with extreme caution.

Temperatures in the Bangor area are expected to drop below zero this evening, leaving many homes with dangerously low heat levels. Understanding that Mainers are generally self-reliant and are often hesitant to seek help, we urge everyone to take appropriate steps to ensure their safety and that of their neighbor. If you or someone you know needs assistance, please call. The City will continue to provide updates as circumstances and weather conditions change
