If you are out and about this afternoon and early evening, you should keep an eye to the sky, as the National Weather Service's Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Coastal Hancock, Interior Hancock, Coastal Washington, Northern Washington Counties as well as Northern Penobscot, Central Penobscot and Southern Penobscot Counties until 8 PM Monday, July 18th.

In addition to the counties listed above, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch extends to Northwest Aroostooc,Northesast Aroostook, Northern Somerset, Northern Piscataquis, Southesast Aroostook, Central Piscataquis and Southern Piscataquis counties.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch indicates that there is a POTENTIAL for severe thunderstorms and that the weather is conducive to forming. A WARNING requires more immediate action and should be taken seriously. A severe thunderstorm warning indicates that severe weather is imminent inthe area or is already occurring (based on either human observation or doppler radar). The term severe refers to hail greater than or equal to 1.00" in diameter and/or wind gusts that meet or exceed 58 miles per hour.
