The Boston Red Sox took game 1 of the 3 game series, defeating the Oakland A's 4-2 in Fenway Park on Friday, June 5th. Wade Miley pitched well, going 7.1 innings, allowing 2 runs, both earned and giving up 6 hits. Miley struck out 6 and walked 1.Koji Uehara was a bit shaky in the 9th, but closed out the game to pick up his 12th save of the season.

Dustin Pedroia, batting leadoff, was 3-4 with a double and scored twice. He's now batting .311 on the season. Brock Holt, batting 2nd, drove in a run, and was 2-4 with a double.

David Ortiz and Pablo Sandoval were both given the night off.

Oakland's Pat Venditte became the first switch-pitcher in history, firing two scoreless innings.

The game was marred by a fan seriously injured in the stands, after getting hit by a broken bat. The woman, accompanied by her husband and child was reported by numerous media outlets to have life threatening injuries.

The Red Sox and A's play game 2 Saturday afternoon with the pregame starting at 3:20 PM and first pitch at 4:05 on AM 1370 WDEA.  The Red Sox are 25-31 in last place 5.5 games out of first place.
