Despite one of their best starting efforts of the season, the Boston Red Sox could not come up with enough runs and lose to the Rays 2-1 in their series finale. It was the first series loss for the Red Sox in 2015. Boston is now tied for 1st place with the Yankees and Blue Jays, all of who have a 9-7 record. With the game tied at 1 in the bottom of the 9th Anthony Varvaro took the mound for the Sox and gave up three hits including the game winner to Rene Rivera that gave the Rays a walk-off win.

Boston managed just three hits in the game with Pablo Sandoval, Allen Craig and Xander Bogaerts each getting on board. Daniel Nava's sacrifice fly in the second inning drove in the only run of the game for the Sox.

The lone bright spot was the pitching of Clay Buchholz who went 6 innings allowing just 2 hits while striking out 10. After the game Buchholz said it was the best he felt all season and that all of his pitches were working.
