Police have released the identities of the victims in a Tuesday afternoon crash that resulted in the deaths of two people.

The crash occurred on North Main Street in Brewer, otherwise known as Route 9, just after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said their initial investigation determined that a 1999 Chrysler sedan driven by Joseph Richard, 76, of Mexico, Maine was westbound on Route 9 when it crossed the centerline into the oncoming lane. Richard’s vehicle collided with an eastbound 2011 Land Rover driven by Robert Collins, 67, of Barnstable, Mass.

As a result, two passengers in Richard's car were killed. Their names are Joseph W. Laplante, 85, and Ella M. Laplante, 86, of Rumford.

Robert Collins and a passenger, Judy Collins, 69, were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with serious injuries. Joseph Richard and Marjorie Richard, 76, were also taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for serious/critical injuries.

As a result of the crash, Route 9 was closed to traffic until after 5 p.m. Tuesday night from Parkway North to the Day Road as rescue crews dealt with the victims, a reconstruction team worked to determine what happened, and the accident was cleared.
