Stephen Nightingale, M.D.BS

A native Mainer, Dr. Stephen Nightingale grew up in Fort Fairfield, and graduated as salutatorian from his high school class in 1973. During high school, he was one of the top middle distance runners in the state. Dr. Nightingale worked every summer and fall from age 8 through high school on local potato farms. After graduating, he attended West Point from 1973-1975, then transferred to University of Maine to study Chemical engineering where he graduated with a BS in chemical engineering. Dr. Nightingale then went to graduate school in Wisconsin at the Institute of Paper Chemistry. Following completion of his Master’s degree in engineering, he went to work for the largest paper company in the world, International Paper. He spent two years at the corporate research center in Tuxedo Park, NY, applying and developing new energy technology for the production facilities. This was during the first oil embargo when alternative energy technology and improving energy efficiency was critical to the success of the industry.

After four years of traveling throughout the country for International Paper, Dr. Nightingale decided to attend medical school at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. His third and fourth years were at the Tuscaloosa campus, where he had a chance to witness the sports crazed “Crimson Tide” in person. After graduating from UAB, he completed his residency in Springfield, Mass. in both Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. This specialty was relatively new at the time, but has gained interest over the last 20 years.

Since completing his residency, Dr. Nightingale has been in private practice in Ellsworth, Maine. His practice is primarily Internal Medicine and pediatrics, but ten years ago he started treating spider veins with a laser and the rest is history. Since then Coastal Skin Center has become one of the most diversified and all inclusive cosmetic dermatology centers in the state. Through additional training and with the addition of specialized equipment, he is able to treat very simple problems like acne or rosacea or more difficult problems, like excess fat with liposuction, varicose veins with the Venefit vein closure procedure, and facial aging with fillers and fat transfer.

Dr. Nightingale works with each patient to develop their own aesthetic prescription. Since he offers so many procedures he can tailor the prescription to include the best procedure or products for the patient.
