The MDI Volleyball Team picked up their first victory of the season, defeating Cheverus 3-0 after being defeated by Cape Elizabeth, earlier on Saturday 3-0.

In the first match of the day, against the defending State Champions, Cape Elizabeth, MDI lost 3-0 with the game scores 25-8, 25-16, 25-13.

According to Coach Corey

It was a long trip and facing the defending state champions first off proved difficult.  The girls played tough and there were some great rallies, but in the end it was hard for us to sustain any momentum.  Our serving failed us at all the wrong times, leaving us trading points with an opponent that was able to take the side outs and translate them into runs of points, something we cannot allow to happen against a team as good as Cape.  But the hitting improved and we could see the potential at times.

Stat Leaders Against Cape Elizabeth
Cassidy Parady: 8 kills, 1 dig
Emma Forthofer: 3 kills, 1 dig

Mackenzie Hanna: 9 assists

Against Cheverus, later Saturday afternoon, MDI fared much better. They swept the match 3-0 with the individual game scores 25-10, 25-17, 25-13.

According to Coach Corey Papadopoli

Against Cheverus later that day, the team served better and was able generate momentum and keep it on our side.  We also passed better which helped us offensively as well.  It was good to get that first victory and also see the work we still have to do.  It’s early in the season but I think the team is starting to see some of their hard work pay off and how much harder we will need to work to stay competitive with the top teams.
