Under a proposal being crafted by the Maine Principal's Association Football Committee, the MDI High School Football Team would remain in Class C North and Ellsworth High School would remain in Class D.

According to a report from the Portland Press Herald, a fifth class, Class E would be created for struggling programs that have recently dropped varsity football or are considering dropping varsity football. In the proposal, Camden Hills, Maranacook, Sacopee Valley, Boothbay, Telstar and Old Orchard Beach would be placed in Class E for the 2017 season. This class would not compete in the playoffs.

MDI, the Class C North Champions would be joined in Class C North by MCI, last year's Class D State Champion. Winslow, which would be placed in Class D North by enrollment will petition to play up in Class C. Foxcroft Academy would drop to Class D. The proposed Class C North would consist of Nokomis (644), Gardiner (632), Medomak Valley (553), Waterville (544), MDI (526), John Bapst (513), Hermon (504), Belfast (501), Maine Central Institute (497), Oceanside (488), Old Town (478), Winslow* (446) The numbers are the enrollment numbers being used for the classification.

Ellsworth, would be in Class D. The full Class D North conference under the proposal would consist of Ellsworth (448), Foxcroft Academy (447), Washington Academy (417), Mount View (412), Stearns/Lee (350), Orono (354), Houlton (324), Mattanawcook (321), Dexter (304), Bucksport (299).

This proposal still needs to be vetted by the schools who have until February 13th when the Football Committee will vote on the plan. The approved plan will then go to entire body of the Maine Principal's Association who will vote on the plan in April.
