The Mt. Desert Island High School Athletic Department is honored to be inducting its fifth class into the MDI High School Hall of Fame, tonight, October 5th, 2012.  In early September, the hall of fame committee met and selected five outstanding individuals to be enshrined during tonight's  ceremony.

 

Let’s meet the Class of 2012

Coach Dan Koch

 

-Coach Koch started working at MDI High School in 1984  and worked at the high school until 2010. Dan started out as a special Ed teacher and then moved to the science department where he taught chemistry.

 

-Started coaching track in 1985 as a volunteer under the late Howie Richards and continued to coach both indoor & outdoor track until 2010 as either assistant or head coach.

 

-As the track coach Mr. Koch was involved with the field events. His specialty was coaching the pole-vaulter.

 

-Mr. Koch was the driving force to starting girl’s pole vault in the State of Maine.  The first state champion in girl’s pole vault was under Mr. Koch guidance, Megan Palmer.

 

-Coach Koch trademark has become the cowboy’s hats he wears to all the track meets.  Athletes and parents at MDI and throughout the PVC know him as “the coach in the cowboy hat”

 

-Currently Dan is retired and enjoys his free time by traveling and attending western cowboy shows, riding his bike and practicing his shooting skills with his guns.

 

John Carroll

 

-John graduated from Pemetic High School in 1955

 

-John played four years of basketball & three years of baseball

 

-During John's freshmen year he helped lead the basketball team to the Eastern Maine Finals & in his sophomore year the team captured the Eastern Maine Championships.

 

-John was selected to the Eastern Maine All-Tournament Teams his sophomore & freshmen years.

 

-Following high school John attended MCI where he played basketball & football.

 

-At MCI he played on the team that won 22 consecutive wins before dropping the Prep League Finals at the Boston Garden

 

-After MCI John attended Boston University where played basketball & football

 

-After college John worked as a Marine Patrol, Coastal Warden, Chief of Police for Southwest Harbor, served two terms at the State House, Chief Deputy for Knox County & Somerset County and on the security team at the Knox County Airport.

 

-John retired this past July and enjoys his free time at his camp on Moosehead Lake.

 

 

 

 John Rosenfeld

 

-John attended the University of Maine in 1969-1972 and played college soccer all four years.

 

-Shortly after college John started working at MDI High School in the Business Department and became the Math teacher in 1982.  He also supervised the co-op program for many years during his career at the high school

 

-In 1977 John started the varsity boys soccer team and coached for the next 35 years, until 2011.

 

-John has been a member of the NSCAA for 27 years and received his NSCAA Regional diploma in 1991

 

-John served as the vice president of the Maine Soccer Coaches Association from 1984-1987

 

- In 1983 John received the Award for Outstanding Contribution to the State of Maine from the Maine Soccer Coach’s Association

 

-Under John’s leadership his teams won over 250 games, including two Eastern Maine Class B Championships in 1994 & 2000

 

-In 2007 John received the Award for PVC Boy’s Soccer Coach of the Year.

 

                                                                        Dennis Damon

 

-Dennis graduated from Mt. Desert High School in 1967

 

-He played Varsity Baseball & Basketball for four years and was the captain of both teams his senior year

 

-Member of the Class M Boys Basketball State Team in 1965-which was the last boy’s basketball state championship team from MDI

 

-Selected to the Eastern Maine Basketball All Tourney team in 1967

 

-Attended college at the University of Maine from1967-1971.  Played football for four years at UMO and was a two-time letter winner.

 

-Started coaching football & basketball at Orono High School from 1971-1972

 

-Starting teaching at MDI High School in 1972  and continued through 1985 where he worked in the Social Studies Department

 

-Dennis coached Baseball, Basketball & Football during his career at MDI High School.

 

-Received the MPA Maine High School Baseball Coach of the Year Award in 1979

 

-Dennis started the summer baseball “Pony League” program in 1975 and the American Legion Baseball team “Acadians” in 1979

 

-Named Zone One American Legion Coach of the Year in 1981

 

-Dennis retired from teaching in 1985 and served as a Hancock County Commissioner for three terms

 

-In 2002 Dennis was elected as a Maine State Senator for four terms and served 2002-2010

 

 Jay Carroll

 

-Jay graduated from MDI High School in 1988

 

-Jay was a three-sport athlete for his career participating in football, basketball & baseball having earned nine letters-4 football, 2- basketball & 3 for baseball.

 

-In 1988 Jay pitched the baseball team to their first Eastern Maine Championship Finals.  During the playoff run in 1988, Jay pitched two complete game wins and the final three innings in the Eastern Maine Finals.

 

-Jay earned the award for First Team All PVC as a pitcher his senior year.  

 

-Jay was voted the Webber Oil Senior Athlete of the Year by his peers in 1988

 

-Jay was selected captain of the basketball and football team his senior year by his peers

 

-Jay holds the following record in football

 

            As a defensive back he holds the record with most interceptions  in a career with 17

 

            Hold the school & league record for most passes caught in a season with 50 during his senior year. Included in his record-breaking year were seven touchdown receptions and eight two point conversions

 

-Jay’s accomplishments during his senior year earned him All -Conference and All State accolades.

 

-Jay was selected on the LTC All Decade Team for the 1980’s

 

After high school Jay attended MCI and played football and earned the team Most Dedicated player of the Year award.  He also graduated as the Class Valedictorian in 1989.

 

-Jay is currently working for the Maine’s Bureau of Marie Patrol
