MDI Overpowers Oceanside 48-14 [PHOTOS]
The MDI Trojans overpowered the Oceanside Mariners 48-14 in an Eastern Maine Class C Quarterfinal, Friday October 30th in Bar Harbor. The Trojan defense limited Oceanside to 33 yards passing and 16 yards rushing in the 1st Half, while the MDI offense behind Taner Bickford and Colby Lee ran for 202 yards in the 1st Half.
MDI won the toss, and elected to receive, and for the 6tth game this season, scored on their first possession. Taner Bickford took the first handoff and looked like he was stopped but broke free, and galloped 69 yards in 22 seconds for the touchdown. Drew Rich's extra point kick sailed through the uprights and MDI led 7-0 with 11:38 left in the 1st Half.
Oceanside took over at their own 25 yard line, and after 6 plays, were forced to punt, and MDI took over at their own 38 yard line with 7:59 left in the 1st Quarter.
The Trojans marched down the field, running 10 plays, all on the ground, and Bickford capped off the drive, running in from 7 yards out, in a drive that took 4:07. Rich's extra point was good, and with 3:52 left in the 1st Quarter, MDI was up 14-0.
The Mariners were picked off on their next possession, when Isaiah Keene intercepted Brandon DeBrosky's pass, and MDI had the ball on their own 35 with 2:24 left in the 1st Quarter.
3 plays and 1:04 later, Colby Lee ran 51 yards for the touchdown, and Rich kicked the extra point. With 1:40 left in the 1st Quarter, MDI was up 21-0.
Oceanside went 3 and out, as MDI forced a punt, and the Trojans took over at their own 46 yard line. 5 plays and 1:59 later, Croix Albee bulled in from 1 yard out for the touchdown. Rich's point after was good, and with 9:59 left in the 1st Half, MDI led 28-0
Oceanside fumbled on their next possession, and MDI took over on the Oceanside 41 yard line. 3 plays later, Bickford ran in for his 3rd touchdown of the night. The drive took 1:19 as Bickford ran in from the 29 yard line. Rich's kick was good and MDI led 35-0 with 7:48 left in the half.
Oceanside had to punt the ball again, and this time Drew Rich returned the punt 60 yards for a touchdown. It was Rich's 3rd punt return for a touchdown this season. Rich kicked the extra point, and MDI was up 42-0 in the 1st Half.
Oceanside's 8 possessions in the first half resulted in a Punt, Interception, Punt, Fumble, Punt, Punt, Punt and Fumble.
MDI substituted liberally in the 2nd half, as the teams played with running time, until Oceanside scored with 7:21 left in the game, on a 1 yard pass from Sam Atwood to Riley Sprague. The 2-point conversion was good and MDI led 42-8.
The Mariners would score again, as starting quarterback Brandon DeBrosky went back in, and completed a 7 yard pass to Sprague,. The 2-point conversion was good, and MDI was up 42-14 with 2:09 left in the game
MDI's Billy Kerley then broke a 55 yard run, scoring on 1 play with 1:43. Rather than adding to the score, MDI took a knee for the 2-point conversion, and the game ended with the score MDI 48 Oceanside 14
MDI will now travel to Winslow next Saturday, November 7th at 1 PM to play the Winslow Black Raiders in one of the semifinals. Winslow defeated MDI 35-20 on September 18th.
