MDI Model UN Club Fundraising Dinner at Red Sky

The Mount Desert Island High School Model United Nations class is sponsoring a dinner featuring the cuisines of Latin America on April 29 at Red Sky restaurant in Southwest Harbor.

The MDIHS Model UN class is raising money to participate in the 2015 Global Classrooms International Model UN Conference in New York City on May 14-16. The MDIHS students will be representing the country of Bolivia.

The special fixed price dinner, prepared by the Red Sky chefs and members of the Model UN class, includes an appetizer, salad, bread, entrée, dessert and a non-alcoholic beverage and will be presented for $50 per person (tip not included). This dinner is available by reservation only. There will be one seating at 5:30 p.m.

The Model UN conference, sponsored by the United Nations Association of the United States of America is an authentic simulation of the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council and other multilateral bodies that introduces students to the world of diplomacy, negotiation, decision- and policy making, and international relations. At the core of this event is the opportunity for students to explore current world issues and then step into the shoes of UN Ambassadors of member countries as delegates to draft resolutions, plot strategy, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and follow the UN’s rules of procedure while working to resolve problems that affect the world. Delegates debate current issues on the UN’s agenda.

The MDIHS Model UN students are responsible for researching the particular global problem, drawn from today’s headlines, to be addressed, writing position papers and resolutions for submission to the conference, and preparing to debate issues from the perspective of the country they will be representing.

Last year, over 2,300 students from 18 US states and 21 countries met to discuss international issues such as International Narcotics Trafficking, Loan Reform and Forgiveness for Developing Countries and Uses of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Drones).
