MDI Girls Run Past Washington Academy 66-24
The MDI Girls Basketball Team jumped out to a 23-0 lead in the 1st Quarter before Washington Academy scored with 1:23 remaining in the 1st Quarter and coasted to a 66-24 victory over the Raiders in East Machias on Thursday, December 20th.
MDI led 25-3 at the end of the 1st Quarter. Julia Watras and Maddy Candage each scored 6 points for MDI. Hannah Chamberlain had 5 points including a 3-pointer and Alexis Clarito, Leah Carroll, Olivia Gray and Rachelle Swanson each had 2 points for the Trojans. Raeanah Reyonlds had a 3-pointer for the Raiders.
In the 2nd Quarter, MDI outscored Washington Academy 13-10 to take a 38-13 lead at the end of the 1st Half. Elizabeth Jones had 4 points , Julia Watras, Maddy Candage and Rachelle Swanson each had 3 points. For Washington Academy Reynolds had 5 points with a 3-pointer, Katie Leighton had a 3-pointer and Begona Garcia had 2 points.
In the 3rd Quarter, MDI outpaced Washington Academy 15-6 to take a 53-19 lead. Watras and Gray each had 3 points for the Trojans. Clarito, Candage, Cassie Craig and Jones each had 2 points while Swanson was 1-2 from the free throw line. For Washington Academy Mackenzie Cates, Emma Griffin and Garcia each had 2 points.
In the 4th Quarter Jones had 4 points for MDI, Gray sank a 3-pointer, Craig had 3 points and Lindsey McEachern had 2 points. MDI desperately tried to get Zoe Parker her first varsity points but it wasn't to be. For Washington Academy Gabrielle Morang, and Riley Fraser each had 2 points and Teeya Harmon had 1 point.
Everyone with the exception of Parker scored for MDI and the Trojans had 3 players in double figures. Julia Watras had a game high 12 points, Maddy Candage had 11 points and Elizabeth Jones had her first varsity game in double figures, finishing the night with 10 points. The Trojans were 12-26 from the free throw line.
Washington Academy was led by Raeanah Reynolds with 8 points. Washington Academy was 1-10 from the free throw line.
MDI, now 4-0 will play host to John Bapst Friday, December 21st in a game that will be broadcast on AM 1370 WDEA, on WDEA Internet Radio, on our free downloadable APP and on any Alexa enabled device. The pregame will begin at 6:45 with the tipoff at 7PM.
