It was the Battle for Hancock County Girls Version as the MDI Trojans went to Katsiaficas Gym to take on the Ellsworth Eagles and the Trojans came away with a 56-39 victory, in a game that was a lot closer than the final score indicated.

When Ellsworth Coach Andy Pooler commented in the pre-game about the keys to the game for an Ellsworth victory, he mentioned that the team would have to stay out of foul trouble, cope with the MDI defensive pressure, limit turnovers and make free throws. Unfortunately for Ellsworth, two of their key players, Morgan Card and Hailee Langley picked up early fouls, and were limited in the time that they were able to play for fear that they would pick up additional fouls. Both had 3 fouls at the end of the 1st half. Card and Langley, normally workhorses for the Eagles were limited to 16:30 and 23:10 minutes of playing time respectively.

Despite the foul difficulty, MDI and Ellsworth played fairly evenly in the 1st Quarter. MDI led 11-7 at the end of the 1st Quarter. Hannah Shaw for MDI had 7 points in the 1st Quarter,  while Taylor White, Hailee Langley and Annika Firestone all had 2 points for Ellsworth.

At the end of the 1st Half, MDI led Ellsworth 18-13. Morgan Card was limited to 2 points going 2-2 from the free throw line. Freshmen Kelsey Shaw came off the bench for MDI and scored 5 points in the 2nd Quarter. MDI was 6-10 from the free throw line in the 1st Half, while Ellsworth was 3-5.

Ellsworth was still in it at the end of the 3rd Quarter, as MDI's lead was 4, 32-28. In the 3rd Quarter, MDI's Sierra Myrick scored 5 points, draining a 3-pointer then scoring a lay-up after a MDI steal. Langley scored 6 points in the 3rd Quarter for Ellsworth.

MDI pulled away in the 4th Quarter. With Ellsworth's Langley and Card having 4 fouls, MDI pounded the ball inside. In the 4th Quarter, 14 of MDI's 24 points came in the paint, and they shot 8-12 from the free throw line in the 4th Quarter.

For the game, MDI scored 34 points in the paint and were 15-26 from the free throw line. Hannah Shaw led the Trojans in scoring with 24 points, while sister Kelsey Shaw scored 12 points. Ellsworth was led by Hailee Langley with 12 points followed by Emily Berry with 8 points.  Ellsworth was 10-17 from the free throw line. MDI shot 54% from the field while Ellsworth shot 31%

With the victory, MDI improves to 10-1 on the season, while Ellsworth falls to 7-4. MDI's next game is Monday, January 21 when they will host Foxcroft Academy with the tip-off at 1:30. That game may be heard on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio with the pre-game starting at 1:10. Ellsworth's next game is Wednesday, January 23, when they host Washington Academy at 5:30. That game may be heard on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio with the pre-game starting at 5:10. Ellsworth and MDI will play again to conclude the season on Thursday, February 7th in Bar Harbor.
