The Ellsworth Girl's Basketball team has made great strides this season, but the MDI Trojans are one of the upper echelon teams in Eastern Maine Class B, and they proved that on Friday, January 2nd, defeating the Ellsworth Eagles 76-47 at Katsiaficas Gymnasium in Ellsworth.

MDI jumped out to an early 17-6 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter. Hailee Langley scored all 6 points for Ellsworth, while MDI was led by Sarah Phelps with 5 points including a 3-pointer, while Kesley Shaw had 4 points, Sara Norberg had a 3-pointer for 3 points, and Darcy Kanu came off the bench to add 3 points.

In the 2nd Quarter, MDI increased their lead, to take a 39-23 lead at the half. Sierra Tapley poured in 12 points, including a 3-pointer, while Norberg and Shaw each added a 3-pointer for the Trojans. For Ellsworth, Maddie Card had 5 points in the Quarter, including a 3 pointer, and Langley added 6 more points. Caitlin Bean and Emily Berry each added 3 points.

In the 3rd Quarter, the Trojans dominated to take a 57-33 lead. Phelps had 7 points, Shaw 6 points and Tapley added a 3-pointer to lead the Trojans. Ellsworth received 5 points from Bean including a 3-pointer, Samantha Mason had a 3-pointer, and Berry added 2 points.

In the 4th Quarter, Phelps had 2 3-pointers for MDI, while Abbe Miller had 5 points including a 3-pointer, and Norberg hit her 3rd 3-pointer of the night. Mariah Hamor had her first varsity minutes as a Trojan. Callie Hamor added a 3-pointer for Ellsworth.

MDI was led by Sarah Phelps with a game high 22 points, while Sierra Tapley had 19 and Kelsey Shaw 15 points. MDI hit 10 3-pointers on the night, and the Trojans were 12-17 from the free throw line.

Ellsworth was led by Hailee Langley with 14 points, while Caitlin Bean had 8 points and Emily Berry and Maddie Card had 7 points each. Ellsworth was 10-17 from the free throw line.

MDI remains unbeaten on the season at 8-0, and play at Old Town on Tuesday, January 6th at 7 PM in a game that will be broadcast on AM 1370 WDEA and WDEA Internet Radio. Ellsworth, now 5-3 on the season, will play at Hermon on Tuesday, January 6th at 7 PM.
