MDI Boys Fall to Presque Isle 51-48

The MDI Trojans and Presque Isle Boy's Basketball teams were both coming off losses on Friday night, MDI to Caribou 58-51 in double overtime and Presque Isle to Ellsworth 50-42 and both teams were looking for a rebound win. It was Presque Isle who came away with the 51-48 win at Bernard Parady Gymnasium on Saturday, December 28th.

MDI led 15-13 after the end of the 1st Quarter. MDI was up 10-9 in the 1st Quarter, then Jon Phelps hit a 3-pointer and then stole the ball and scored, and with 1:08 left MDI was up 15-9, but Presque Isle scored the final 4 points in the quarter to make it 15-13 Presque Isle was led by Cody Lyford with 5 points including a 3-pointer. .

With 7:23 left in the 1st Half, Chase Norton hit a 3-pointer and Presque Isle led 16-15. Presque Isle was poised to take a 25-22 lead at the half, but on a Abe Philbrook missed free throw, Steven Hanscom grabbed the rebound, and shot as time expired and was fouled. Hanscom then hit both free throw with 0.0 left on the clock, and Presque Isle's lead was 25-24. Presque Isle was 3-4 from the free throw line in the quarter. Philbrook had 7 points in the quarter for MDI.

MDI took the lead with 4:13 left in the 3rd Quarter, when Hanscom hit a shot and was fouled, and sank the free throw, giving MDI the lead 33-32. With 1:03 left, Michael Boone hit a 3-pointer for the Wildcats and Presque Isle led 37-36. With 17.6 seconds left, Andrew Davis went 1-2 from the free throw line, and the score was tied at the end of 3 Quarters 37-37.

MDI took a 3 point lead to start the 4th Quarter when Philbrook hit a 3 pointer, making it 40-37. Hanscom added a field goal, and with 6:51 left MDI was up by 5, 42-37. Bradley Shields of Caribou scored from within the paint for Presque Isle, and Boone added a filed goal, and with 5:51 left, MDI led by 1 point 42-41. Phelps stole the ball, layed it up, and with 4:48 left MDI led 44-41. But Cody Lyford hit a 3-pointer to tie the score with 4:30 left, and Shields put Presque Isle in the lead with a 2-pointer 46-44 with 3:45 left. Philbrook went 1-2 from the free throw line for MDI and with 2:55 left Presque Isle led 46-45. Karson Eaton scored for Presque Isle, but Jon Phelps hit another 3-pointer for MDI to tie the score 48-48 with 1:35 left to go in the game. Presque Isle closed out the scoring as Lyford went 1-2 from the free throw line, and Lyford scored a two off of a rebound, and with 45 seconds left Presque Isle had the lead, 51-48.

MDI was led by Abe Philbrook with 15 points, while Jon Phelps and Steven Hanscom each had 12 points. MDI was 9-17 from the free throw line. Presque Isle was led by Cody Lyford with 11 points, and Bradley Shields had 10 points, scoring all of his points in the second half. The Wildcats were 9-14 from the free throw line.

MDI falls to 4-2, and will travel to the Cross Insurance Center to play the John Bapst Crusaders on Tuesday, December 31st at 1:30 in a game that will be aired on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio. Presque Isle improves to 3-4, and hosts Hermon next Saturday, January 7th at 1:30 PM.
