It was a battle of undefeated teams Friday night, December 27th as the Caribou Vikings were playing the MDI Trojans and it went to double overtime before Caribou came away with a 58-51 victory.

MDI led 11-9 at the end of the 1st Quarter, with Caribou going to the free throw line 8 times, and scoring 5 points. Cody Herbert was fouled with no time left in the 1st Quarter, and MDI had committed it's 7th foul, so Herbert went to the line shooting 1 and 1, and sank them both. Dayne Savage had 5 points in the quarter for Caribou, while MDI was led by Abe Philbrook with 5 points including a 3-pointer.

In the 2nd Quarter MDI extended it's lead to 26-19. Jon Phelps heated up, scoring 8 in the 2nd Quarter, and Steven Hanscom had 5 points including a 3-pointer. MDI went 4-6 from the free throw line in the quarter. Caribou who had been 5-8 from the line in the 1st Quarter, cooled off going 2-8 with their foul shots.

In the 3rd Quarter the scoring pace slowed down, as both teams missed shots, and played deliberately. Caribou outscored MDI in the quarter 8-4, and MDI still had a lead, althought it was cut and it was 30-27. Caribou went 2-4 from the line in the quarter, while MDI was 1-4.

In the 4th Quarter it was back and forth. Caribou took the lead, then MDI regained it, and it was never more than a 3 point lead for either team. Dayne Savage scored 7 points in the 4th Quarter for Caribou, and the Vikings went 5-6 from the free throw line. Abe Philbrook had 7 points in the quarter for MDI and Ryan Littlefield hit two key free throws to tie the game, and after regulation time it was 40-40.

In the 1st Overtime, Cody Herbert scored 4 points for Caribou, while Philbrook, Stephen Hanscom and Riley Swanson each scored 2 points for MDI. Swanson, a freshmen, hit two free throws to tie the game.

In Double Overtime Philbrook fouled out for MDI and Adam Collins did so for Caribou. Caribou had just too much firepower in the second overtime and made their free throws, and came away with the win in double overtime to remain undefeated.

Caribou was led by Dayne Savage with 24 points, including 8 points in the overtime periods. Cody Herbert had 19 for the Vikings. Caribou ended up 20-32 from the free throw line. MDI was led by Abe Philbrook  and Jon Phelps with 14 points each. MDI was 14-19 from the free throw line. Philbrook, Hanscom and Swanson all had 3-pointers for the Trojans.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, December 28th. MDI (4-1) will play host to Presque Isle (2-4) while Caribou (4-0) will play at Ellsworth (4-1). The MDI-Presque Isle game will be aired on WDEA AM 1370 at 2:30 PM.
