MDI Boys Defeat Caribou 59-55

The MDI Boys traveled up to Caribou on Friday, January 24th and came away with a victory 59-55 to gain a little revenge after Caribou defeated MDI down in Bar Harbor in double overtime 58-51 on December 27, 2013.

MDI jumped out to an early 15-8 lead in the 1st Quarter. Jon Phelps had 5 points including a 3-pointer, and Andrew Davis played with his back to the basket and scored 6 points for the Trojans. Kameron Manter had 4 points for Caribou.

In the 2nd Quarter, Caribou held MDI scoreless for nearly the first five minutes of the quarter, and ended up outscoring MDI 15-5 to take a 23-20 half time lead. MDI put Caribou tot he line 12 times in the 2nd Quarter, and they hit 9-12. Cody Herbert had 6 points in the quarter for the Vikings. Caribou double teamed MDI's Andrew Davis, in an attempt to deny him the ball, and were successful in the quarter.

In the 3rd Quarter, MDI got the ball early to Davis, and he scored 5 in the quarter. Phelps added a 3-pointer, and Abe Philbrook had 7 points including a 3-pointer. Donovan Savage added a 3-pointer for Caribou, and Herbert poured in 6 more points for the Vikings. MDI did a much better job playing defense, and only put Caribou to the line twice in the 3rd Quarter, and Caribou converted both of the free throws, giving them 12-16 through the 3rd Quarter. At the end of the 3rd Quarter MDI had the lead, 38-36.

In the 4th Quarter, MDI went to the line, and converted 11-15 free throws, and Jon Phelps went 7-8 from teh free throw line in the 4th Quarter. Philbrook was 1-2, Riley Swanson was 1-3 and Steven Hanscom was 2-2. MDI played very good defense, and Andrew Davis blocked a couple of shots in the 4th Quarter, including at the end of the game. Dayne Save scored 9 points in the 4th Quarter, including 2 3-pointers at the end, to bring Caribou closer, but MDI prevailed 59-55.

MDI was led by John Phelps with a game high 21 points, including 2 3-pointers. Andrew Davis had 13 points, and Steven Hanscom had 12 points. MDI ended up 16-22 from the free throw line. Caribou was led by Dayne Savage with 15 points, including 2 3-pointers, while Cody Herbert had 14 points. Caribou was 13-17 from the free throw line.

With the victory, MDI improves to 10-3 on the season, and plays at Presque Isle on Saturday, January 25th at 2:30 in a game that will be heard on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio.Caribou falls to 9-3 and plays host to Ellsworth on Saturday, January 25th at 2:30 PM.
