MDI Beats Old Town 21-14

The MDI Trojans defeated the Old Town Coyotes in the Class C Eastern Maine Quarterfinals in Bar Harbor on Saturday, November 2, 2013 by the score of 21-14.

Old Town won the coin toss and deferred, and MDI received the ball on the Old Town 46 as Old Town tried an on-side kick. MDI took the ball promptly down the field and were poised to score when they fumbled the ball and Old Town took over on their own 4 yard line with 10:48 left in the 1st Quarter.

Old Town moved the ball but then Braden Upshaw fumbled, and MDI took over at the Old Town 37 with 9:04 left in the 1st Quarter.

After a MDI penalty, MDI handed the ball off to Class C Rushing leader Teagan Candage who ran 41 yards and when Jon Phelps kicked the extra point, the Trojans were on top 7-0 with 8:36 left in the 1st Quarter.

MDI would score again with 2:08 left in the 1st Half, when Taner Bickford went in from 1 yard out, finishing a 88 yard drive that took 6:19. After the 1st Half ended, MDI led 14-0.

Old Town received the ball to start the 3rd Quarter, and after a good kick-off return, took over on the MDI 44. A drive that took 3:21 resulted in a Cody Whitmore 1 yard plunge. Old Town went for 2 points, but the 2 point conversion was no good as the pass was incomplete, and with 8:27 left in the 3rd Quarter, MDI led 14-6.

MDI received the ball and took over on their own 48 yard line. 2:23 later, Sandy Henggeler scored on a 6 yard run, and Phelps kicked the extra point. With 6:01 left in the 3rd MDI led 21-6.

Old Town didn't give up. With 9:09 remaining in the game, Old Town scored on a 37 yard drive, taking 3:03 off the clock. Upshaw scored from 4 yards out, and when he ran in for the two point conversion, the score was 21-14.

MDI took over at their 47 yard line with 6 minutes left, and they just needed to keep the ball on the ground, and eat up the clock and they would win. But they fumbled the ball with 2:24 left in the game, and Old Town took over on their own 26 yard line. But the MDI defense stiffened and they took over on the Old Town 34 with 56.4 seconds left, and after taking a couple of knees, MDI came away with a hard fought victory 22-14.

MDI will now travel to Waterville Saturday November 9 to play the Waterville Purple Panthers at 1 PM. MDI defeated Waterville 42-35 on October 18th in Bar Harbor, Waterville's lone loss on the year. The MDI-Waterville Semi-final will be heard on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio with the pre-game starting at 12:40 PM.
