A 3,500-pound great white shark that makes its home off the East coast has become a social media sensation.

@MaryLeeShark is a fake Twitter name for a great white shark that was tagged off the coast of Cape Cod by OCEARCH, a non-profit research organization that tags and keeps track of great white sharks and other predators across the globe. The organization tags sharks with GPS devices to keep track of their movements.  Great white sharks are being seen with more frequency up and down the East coast and the group's project helps to improve understanding and encourage conservation of these big fish.

At this moment, @MaryLeeShark has over 44,000 followers on Twitter.

Where was Mary Lee Shark as of Monday morning?  Somewhere off the coast of Virginia.
