Clay Buchholz pitched his best game of the season, and looked like the ace the Red Sox expected him to be, on Friday night, but the offense wasn't there, and the Red Sox were nipped by the Seattle Mariners 2-1.

Buchholz went 8 innings, striking out 11 and gave up just 3 hits. One of those hits was a homer by Seth Smith.

Nelson Cruz who leads the American League with a .358 batting average was held in check by the Red Sox until the 9th inning. As a matter of fact Cruz had struck out 3 times, but in the 9th inning his single scored Brad Miller from second, to give the Mariners the walk off win. Junichi Tazawa took the loss for the Red Sox.

David Ortiz, Shane Victorino and Xander Bogaerts each had 2 hits for the Red Sox, and one of Bogaerts' hits was a triple. Mike Napoli had the other hit for Boston.

The Red Sox and Mariners play again on Saturday night, May 16th with the pregame starting at 9:10 with the pregame starting at 8:25 on AM 1370 WDEA. Rick Porcello 3-2 with a 4.50 ERA) faces Felix Hernandez (6-0 1.85 ERA). Boston is 17-19 and in 3rd place , 3.5 games out of 1st place.
