Maine’s Moose Lottery Is Saturday!

Are you a moose hunter?  Well, you must be getting excited!

Maine's annual moose permit lottery is this Saturday and 4,110 permits will be awarded!  Many anxious moose hunters are expected to attend the event.  The event will be held at Greenville High School beginning at 3pm!

Maine has 29 WIldlife Management Districts, different areas of the state that the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife manages, moose hunting this year will be allowed in 25 of them.  10% of the moose hunting licenses will be awarded to out of state hunters.

Many moose hunters have been applying for a permit since 1982.  If awarded a permit, the hunter gets to take one fellow hunter along with them. The bag limit is one moose per year per permit.  Moose may be hunted with rifle, shotgun, handgun, muzzleloader, or bow and  arrow. This year there are five different hunting sessions between September and November.

According to a computer programmer who works with the DIF&W, a Maine resident has a 1.9% chance of obtaining a moose hunting permit this year.  If someone has been applying since 1998 and has never won, their chances are near 40%. If you received a permit in 2011 or 2012, remember, you must wait three years before receiving another, that according to law.
